Achievements of Prof. VINOD KUMAR
Obtained MBBS and MD from Agra University in 1961 and 1964 respectively. A former Professor of Medicine from All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), New Delhi, Prof. Vinod Kumar is presently working as Emeritus Professor in Medicine since 10 years at St Stephens Hospital, Delhi, teaching postgraduate DNB medical students there and providing clinical care. Having spent 32 years at AIIMS and retired from there in 1997 with a long experience in teaching, research and health care, Prof Vinod Kumar has published 200 papers and 3 books including 80 papers and 2 books in the field of Gerontology. He continues to guide several postgraduate theses and has completed many scientific and public speaking assignments in Medical Gerontology and its areas of health care, social and income security as well as psychological and welfare aspects.
Nationally, Prof Vinod Kumar has been involved in elderly welfare activities of Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment like providing consultations for National Policy for Older Persons, setting up a National Institute on Aging, framing Model Rules under Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007 and devising Postgraduate Training Courses in Geriatric Care. He was the Member of the First National Council for Older Persons constituted by this Ministry in 1999. Other agencies with whom Prof Vinod Kumar had the opportunity for interacting in gerontological activities are Ministry of Health including the National Institute of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Science and Technology, National Human Rights Commission, Indira Gandhi Open University, National Open School.
In the Non Government sector, Prof Vinod Kumar is associated with Geriatric Society of India, being its Patron and Fellow and having been its Past President. He is also connected with other organisations like HelpAge India (Member, Advisory Committee), Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (Past National Vice President, Past President of its Delhi Chapter), Indian Association oF Gerontology (on Editoriel Board of its Journal) and Association Gerontology India (Past Vice President). Prof Vinod Kumar had organised an Indo-UK Workshop on Public Health Implications of Aging in 1993 and the International Symposium of Gerontology in 1994 attended by delegates from India and abroad.
Internationally, Prof Kumar was appointed Member of the WHO Expert Advisory Panel on Aging and Health for 10 years between 1996 and 2007, an assignment that gave him an extensive international exposure in Gerontology and opportunities to provide expert consultations to foreign governments. He was also invited participant to certain gerontological activities of other UN bodies like UNFPA and FAO.
Prof Vinod Kumar was invited speaker to successive World Congresses of Gerontology held in Hungary, Australia and Canada in 1993, 1997 and 2001 respectively and a Scientific Advisory Board Member of successive World Congresses on Aging Male held in Germany, Czeck Republic, Austria and USA in the year 2002, 2004, 2006 and 2008 respectively and also the invited speaker to many other international conferences.
Prof Vinod Kumar received Lifetime Achievement Award from India’s Health Minister at the First Indian Aging Congress held in 2004 in New Delhi.
